This book is beautifully presented and allows the reader to journey through an indoor garden without the maintenance and care of living plants. There's useful information on china patterns that feature floral motifs and large photographs of colorful interiors utilizing various wall coverings.
That's exactly what I did when I bought Peter McHoy's "Gardening Through the Year" while on a trip to England. The book is subtitled, "A step-by-step guide to seasonal gardening tasks," and it is all that...and more.
This full color book is divided into each of the four seasons, with each season further subdivided into early, mid and late seasons. Each of the 12 chapters begins with a list of seasonal jobs for the kitchen garden, flower garden, greenhouse and conservatory (you gotta love those Brits!). There's also a list of plants that are at their best at each time of year. Various garden tasks are pictured and clearly described in step-by-step sequence.
Of particular interest to this novice are chapters on pruning and propagating from seed, layering, and stem and leaf cuttings. There are also excellent sections on overwintering plants and how to plant baskets and containers.
McHoy's book proves that there can be something to do in the garden nearly every day of the year. It's a great cure for the winter doldrums and a valuable reference throughout the year. Plus, you can impress your friends with charming phrases such as "pricking out" and "potting on"...delivered with an English accent, of course!

This book covers all the essential herbs, vegetables, fruits, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and bulbs for your garden. Beautiful photos combined with thorough descriptions of each variety provide great inspiration. In addition, the book displays several successful garden layout options. A summary at the end of each section recommends plants by numerous categories: shade lovers, moisture lovers, blue flowers, pink flowers, etc. Other than lack of detail in pruning suggestions, the book covers it all!
I found this book quite helpful in idenitifying plants in my new yard. Since I did not have the luxury of asking the previous home owner what was planted, I have had to rely heavily on this book to tell me what I have. The down side is that while the book has beautiful photos, it does not give many details. So if you you are looking to know every little thing about a plant then this is not the book for you.

I really like this garden book, as I think every garden big or small should be tackled one space at a time. I used this to landscape two courtyards, it is a good book for homeowners, but also for landscape designers. The hardcover version is really nice, could be a coffee table book with its beautiful pictures. In addition to container gardening ideas, it has great tips on setting up outdoor private areas or rooms, affordably. The problem we all have is we go buy a bunch of stuff that looks great at the garden center, but it we really need to plan colors, shapes, size, and textures of plants, as well as the the other features and hardscapes of those spaces. The book also explains the pros and cons of plants and what plants need a sunnier or shadier spot. The author teaches us how to do it, as well as having plans we can borrow. From Design basics, plant selection, to how to create some of those things in the garden you never knew you could easily do yourself. He has instructions for building garden paths, paved areas, water features, patios, fences and retaining walls, you name it. So far everything I have tried from this book worked, and was easy to understand. It is 160 pages, over 300 photos, a big oversized book that measures 12" high x 9" wide and weighs 2.75 pounds. I recommend.

Considering myself to be only an average (although passionate) gardener, I purchased this book because I was looking for a good reference on the topic of bulbs. An amazingly exhaustive volume that was honored by the American Horticulture Society and named one of '75 Great American Garden Books', 'Bulbs' by John E. Bryan is almost overwhelming for the average gardener.
The beginning chapters of 'Bulbs' cover the normal gardening topics such as a brief bulb history, nomenclature, propagation, cultivation, forcing, and pests & diseases. The main bulk of the book (and it's real use) is the alphabetical listing of bulbs by genus. Included in each genus listing are general historical and general remarks followed by advice on their culture, pests and diseases, propagation methods and an amazingly complete listing of the species. The 1,171 photographs in the book are compiled alphabetically in three sections of plates, meaning that to see the plant photo referenced in the text you have to flip to the plant photo plate section of the book. These photos are (IMHO) generally of good quality and include flower close-ups, the entire plant, historical flower drawings/plates as well as pictures of some of the bulbs in the wild of mixed quality.
What makes this book seem overwhelming to the average gardener (i.e. me) is the sheer amount of information (in comparison to other gardening books). Following the listing of each species is a description of the plant, (possibly) individual cultural information and a list of known cultivars. In the case of very large or extensively hybridized genuses (i.e. tulipa) where there are many different 'families' of plants (i.e. Single early tulips, Darwin hydrid tulips, Lily-flowered tulips, etc), the families of plants are listed and described in detail with a few representative cultivars listed followed by the individual species. Because of this, 'Bulbs' can seem decidedly 'unfriendly' toward the average gardener (i.e. someone who just wants to look up the best red tulip cultivars). Furthermore, because 'Bulbs' lists all of the known species within the genus and not just the common 'garden worthy' varieties, I found it is very easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of entries. However, it is also this completeness that also makes this book an invaluable reference for the more advanced gardeners, collectors and scientists alike. (In the case of the extensively hybridized genuses (i.e. tulips and daffadils), a more specialized reference book would probably be more appropiate than this through bulb survey.)
Overall, I believe that 'Bulbs' is an amazingly through book, but perhaps a little too through for the average gardener (I'm still keeping an eye open for a good garden bulb book - and I'm not a big fan of those smaller sized Taylor guides - any suggestions?). For the serious gardener, though, this book is a must read.
So said O'Keefe in describing what it's like to hold a flower and really to look at it.
O'Keefe managed to convey some of that wonder in paint. She grew them to huge size, setting them at or above human scale. She drew them in scorching colors, like "Poppy" or "Oriental poppy," or in stark lights and darks ("Jimson weed" and "Black hollyhock"). She displayed them with human passion, possibly drawing parallels between a plant's organs of regeneration and a human's ("Red canna" and "Yellow sweet peas"). Whatever you see in these - and different people will see differently - they are monumental presentations of something we think of as small and delicate. By itself, that's a message: the big and the small are equals in the world, when considered at their proper scale.
Maybe it's not fair to O'Keefe's ouvre to isolate one part of it like this - she preferred to show her work with a better balance of subjects and styles. These wonderful paintings deserve attention of their own, though. Some of the paintings are up to six feet tall and seven wide - even at 12"x10", book can't capture the full drama of the work. Still, it's an amazing collection.

I had difficulty finding this book, but it was well worth the time and effort to locate it. You will be impressed with the coloured photography, and the amount of information presented on a very extensive variety of plants. From sun requirements, bloom time to zone hardiness, everything is here. The information is well organized, factual and easy to find, even though there are over 700 pages in total. I have found a number of plants listed here that are not found in similar books. Whether you are a beginner or experienced gardner, it still makes a great addition to your resource library.

Using two overriding metaphors, the Biblical story of David and Goliath, and Karl von Clausewitz's On War, this book lays out ten principles to develop and execute strategies to leverage relatively small investments in advertising, thoroughly integrate this strategic advertising approach with other marketing, and leapfrog overall corporate growth. Also, four types of buying decisions, five kinds of risks your customers take in considering you, three categories of benefits to the purchaser (something I've not come across elsewhere), five personality attributes that define most brands, and nine tests of a strong brand--tests that recognize that a brand is not only about a company's deliberate messaging, but also about the customer's direct experience.
To a solopreneur, like me, the dollar amounts involved are sometimes scary, as in the case of Gardenburger, which leveraged a single highly visible ad on the final episode of Seinfeld--what would normally be a very effective way to waste a whole lot of bucks in a big hurry--into 400 media hits and a widely expanded distribution network that directly fueled a 91 percent growth in the next year's revenues. But many of the examples were executed for far less, and those techniques that apply outside of purchased advertising cost little or nothing.
Among the key lessons: choose and define a battlefield small enough to prevail, muster enough resources to dominate your chosen slice of category, and answer the question about why people should buy from you. Oh yes, and don't be afraid to take risks and to be unconventional--not for its own sake but as part of a well-thought-out strategic plan.
Two of the strategies the book often suggests are to direct your messaging to influencers/dealers, rather than end-users, and to create marketing that itself offers high value. My favorite example is the telephone call center management software company that researched its market to discover that putting out bid requests was a major headache for its prospects--so the company created software to automate the process, and distributed it at no cost to any call center manager who requested it. This tool was designed, first of all, to suggest bid specs that favored the company's solution, and second, to create a very warm prospect list.
I very much like the creativity this book brings--not for its own sake, but for the sake of achieving big results for relatively low costs. If advertising is a significant part of your strategy, you'll want to study Underdog Advertising in conjunction with 33 Ruthless Rules of Local Advertising by Michael Calder, my own Grassroots Marketing: Getting Noticed in a Noisy World, and at least a few of the classics by the likes of Claude Hopkins, David Ogilvy, and John Caples.

I aggree with the other reader when he says that this is indeed a very useful book and one that I consult regularly when looking for quick answers to some of my questions. I personally like the color-matching guide, which helps you select what to plant based on the color of the flowers and on the plant's height. However, I think this book lacks some information on which annuals to plant close to your perennials (very few gardens that I know of contain only perennials). I also dislike the fact that the section on different species is organized by their scientific names rather than list them by their common names, which makes me constantly have to go to the index to find where the entry for a specific plant is. How many people know the Latin name for common species such as Shasta Daisies, Black-eyed Susans and Day Lillies???
