I bought this book as a companion book to my Sunset Western Garden book. The main reason why I bought it was because of the color photos (Sunset's book only has sketches) and I found I needed to see real photographs of the flowers when planning my gardens. For my purposes, it serves me very well allthough it seems that it contains only the "popular" species as far as flowers go. It also is very short in its descriptions and what type of care the plants need. It does not contain enough information on its own, but as a cross reference, it is great. I find it serves my purposes well for needing to see "real life" pictures of the potential flowers I want to plant.

That's exactly what I did when I bought Peter McHoy's "Gardening Through the Year" while on a trip to England. The book is subtitled, "A step-by-step guide to seasonal gardening tasks," and it is all that...and more.

This full color book is divided into each of the four seasons, with each season further subdivided into early, mid and late seasons. Each of the 12 chapters begins with a list of seasonal jobs for the kitchen garden, flower garden, greenhouse and conservatory (you gotta love those Brits!). There's also a list of plants that are at their best at each time of year. Various garden tasks are pictured and clearly described in step-by-step sequence.

Of particular interest to this novice are chapters on pruning and propagating from seed, layering, and stem and leaf cuttings. There are also excellent sections on overwintering plants and how to plant baskets and containers.

McHoy's book proves that there can be something to do in the garden nearly every day of the year. It's a great cure for the winter doldrums and a valuable reference throughout the year. Plus, you can impress your friends with charming phrases such as "pricking out" and "potting on"...delivered with an English accent, of course!

The Small Garden Book: A Practical Guide to Successful Gardening in Small Spaces

I really like this garden book, as I think every garden big or small should be tackled one space at a time. I used this to landscape two courtyards, it is a good book for homeowners, but also for landscape designers. The hardcover version is really nice, could be a coffee table book with its beautiful pictures. In addition to container gardening ideas, it has great tips on setting up outdoor private areas or rooms, affordably. The problem we all have is we go buy a bunch of stuff that looks great at the garden center, but it we really need to plan colors, shapes, size, and textures of plants, as well as the the other features and hardscapes of those spaces. The book also explains the pros and cons of plants and what plants need a sunnier or shadier spot. The author teaches us how to do it, as well as having plans we can borrow. From Design basics, plant selection, to how to create some of those things in the garden you never knew you could easily do yourself. He has instructions for building garden paths, paved areas, water features, patios, fences and retaining walls, you name it. So far everything I have tried from this book worked, and was easy to understand. It is 160 pages, over 300 photos, a big oversized book that measures 12" high x 9" wide and weighs 2.75 pounds. I recommend.

Ortho All About Perennials (Ortho's All About Gardening)

I aggree with the other reader when he says that this is indeed a very useful book and one that I consult regularly when looking for quick answers to some of my questions. I personally like the color-matching guide, which helps you select what to plant based on the color of the flowers and on the plant's height. However, I think this book lacks some information on which annuals to plant close to your perennials (very few gardens that I know of contain only perennials). I also dislike the fact that the section on different species is organized by their scientific names rather than list them by their common names, which makes me constantly have to go to the index to find where the entry for a specific plant is. How many people know the Latin name for common species such as Shasta Daisies, Black-eyed Susans and Day Lillies???

Gardening With Roses: Designing With Easy-Care Climbers, Ramblers & Shrubs

I wanted to look at Tony Lord's book on designing with roses before buying it on amazon. So I borrowed it on interlibrary loan and somehow received the McKeon book instead. There was that sudden rush of disappointment when I went to pick up the book. However, I consider myself fortunate to have made the error.

The first section of the McKeon book does a good job of explaining, in laymen's terms, how roses are categorized and what the specific characteristics of each rose class are. In the second section, There is a straight forward description of planting, pruning and caring for roses. The pruning section gives a description for each category of rose. McKeon also does a good, brief job of describing how to propagate roses by layering and by taking cuttings.

The second half of the book focuses on design for specific types of garden (the cottage garden, container garden, the city garden garden, etc.) Each of these sections gives a diagram and plant list for the garden style discussed and shows how the roses discussed at the beginning of the book actually work in gardens. I will be using the plan for the butterfly garden in a local project.

The limitations of the book include the fact that this book uses plants appropriate to the UK, although most of the plants in the butterfly garden design are perfectly suited to the upper Midwest of the U.S. The USDA hardiness zone is given for most roses discussed. This author has definite preferences for roses she considers the best in terms of beauty and being care-free and her recommendations for modern roses are quite limited; she almost completely dismisses hybrid teas as suitable for the care-free garden and her discussion of Austin roses is too brief. An additional limitation is that some of the wider angle photos showing how roses are used in gardens do not identify the rose that is the focal point of the shot. Also, some of the roses mentioned briefly in the text are not included in the index.

Overall, for a beginning rose gardener, I would consider this a good find or good gift. It is straightforward, does not overburden the gardener with too much technical information, gives useful information about old roses, and has wonderful rose photos; for these reasons I rate it a 4 instead of a 3. Having read this book, I will be able to better appreciate the next bed of antique-appearing roses I encounter.
