This book is beautifully presented and allows the reader to journey through an indoor garden without the maintenance and care of living plants. There's useful information on china patterns that feature floral motifs and large photographs of colorful interiors utilizing various wall coverings.
That's exactly what I did when I bought Peter McHoy's "Gardening Through the Year" while on a trip to England. The book is subtitled, "A step-by-step guide to seasonal gardening tasks," and it is all that...and more.
This full color book is divided into each of the four seasons, with each season further subdivided into early, mid and late seasons. Each of the 12 chapters begins with a list of seasonal jobs for the kitchen garden, flower garden, greenhouse and conservatory (you gotta love those Brits!). There's also a list of plants that are at their best at each time of year. Various garden tasks are pictured and clearly described in step-by-step sequence.
Of particular interest to this novice are chapters on pruning and propagating from seed, layering, and stem and leaf cuttings. There are also excellent sections on overwintering plants and how to plant baskets and containers.
McHoy's book proves that there can be something to do in the garden nearly every day of the year. It's a great cure for the winter doldrums and a valuable reference throughout the year. Plus, you can impress your friends with charming phrases such as "pricking out" and "potting on"...delivered with an English accent, of course!

This book covers all the essential herbs, vegetables, fruits, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and bulbs for your garden. Beautiful photos combined with thorough descriptions of each variety provide great inspiration. In addition, the book displays several successful garden layout options. A summary at the end of each section recommends plants by numerous categories: shade lovers, moisture lovers, blue flowers, pink flowers, etc. Other than lack of detail in pruning suggestions, the book covers it all!
I found this book quite helpful in idenitifying plants in my new yard. Since I did not have the luxury of asking the previous home owner what was planted, I have had to rely heavily on this book to tell me what I have. The down side is that while the book has beautiful photos, it does not give many details. So if you you are looking to know every little thing about a plant then this is not the book for you.
