Trivia Question: In what book will you find Manny Sanguillen, the American Society for the Propagation of Cavities, Shaquille O'Neill, the hot new CD Yanni at Niagara Falls, and a kitty litter box for Jabba the Hut? I'm willing to bet you'll never guess. I'm also willing to bet you'll be surprised, amused, and inspired by that very same book: Jim McCann's outstanding Stop and Sell the Roses.
Jim McCann, the easy-going and lovable "flower guy" who stars in his own TV ads, is arguably one of the great entrepreneurial success stories of our generation. But don't be fooled at how easy he makes it appear on television. McCann worked hard for his success and, like most other successful entrepreneurs, realized more than his share of failure as he built the organization that is now recognized worldwide as 1-800-FLOWERS. His story will astound and inspire you.
McCann's book, subtitled Lessons from Business & Life, is as enjoyable a read as you are likely to find in any business book of its kind. Within his 1-800-FLOWERS McCann has created a culture of fun in the workplace and he manages to create the same level of fun for his readers. His approach to the New Retail Paradigm will likely be modeled--to some extent--by every aspiring entrepreneur who reads this book. And in case you get carried away with the occasional bursts of laughter as you make your way through his witty and often laugh-out-loud narration, he will just as quickly silence you and bring you back to the harsh realities of entrepreneurial life with provocative statements like, "If you are an entrepreneur and you do not eat, breath, and live your business, you will very soon be an ex-entrepreneur."
Among the many lessons learned from his book, the one he stresses above all others--and the one that has stuck with me long after I finished reading it--is: first make a relationship, then do business. If you are inclined to read autobiographies of successful people as a way of gleaning some useful information to apply to your own life, Stop and Sell the Roses gets my highest recommendation.
As the name of the book implies, this book is more than simply a "how to" guide for business. It contains lessons from McCann's life and business that you will enjoy and benefit from for years to come. For those fans of the book--of which I am obviously one--we can only hope that as the retail paradigm continues to shift and 1-800-FLOWERS continues to lead the way, Jim McCann will bless his readers with a follow-up book in the near future.
great book - easy to use and carry around - very straight forward - no confusing references or crazy in depth descriptions - - - communications with seller was great - safe and quick delivery
This book has just the right size to be perfect. It is advertised as being a reproduction of the original pocket sized books that the Regency and Victorian women carried in their purses, and it succeeds. If you are a fan of such things, this is a great book. It is small as lightweight, so you can carry it wherever you go. The only thing that I can say, it I wish it came in a more believable cover. What it has is glossy soft cover, so it cannot be passed as an original.

Although not as in-depth as her bigger, later books, these three offerings of Pilcher's offer the same warmth and sense of being there. You can smell the flowers and the sea and the burning peat and feel the damp climate without ever growing cold.
Some Flowers beautifully expresses a passion for working with nature, that is at once very English and very universal. Vita Sackville Wests' love of the unusual and the seemingly ordinary is written in a concise yet tender way. The illustrations mirror the text and each compliments the other to create a truly lovely book, that definantly bears up to repeated reading and may well inspire the gardener to seek out a few specimens of their own!
This book is a collection of short articles on garden plants, pests, and diseases. The articles are organized in alphabetical order. Each of the plant articles begins with a short description, and then goes on to include information about planting (when, where, how), germination, care, harvesting, storing, pests and diseases, as well as tips for the kitchen and garden. In general, these articles use only the common names for the plants, and scientific names are not included. The pest articles (mainly about insects, but there are also some articles about pesky mammals and birds), are generally shorter, and include a description of the problem, how to recognize it, and how to combat it (organically). There are also a few articles on such topics as mulches and composting. Arkin includes a wide range of herbs as well as garden vegetables and fruits, and she includes notes on companion planting in the tips sections of the plants articles. The book also includes a chart of when to plant where (in the continental United States), and a garden glossary. There are decorative collage-type illustrations at the beginning of each letter of the alphabet, but no utilitarian diagrams or drawings.

This book is vivid with with full illistrations on each page. It has a getting started section that teaches you about using natural plant materials, color and style, and making the bases for the wreaths. The subsequent chapters give step by step instructions on how to make wreaths for various occasions, such as weddiings and baptisms, seasonal wreaths for spring, summer, fall, and winter, and holiday wreaths for Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Christmas. i'm new to rose gardening, so the info in this book was invaluable! I highly recommend it.
I bought a few of these books to teach my son about nature. He's just 10 months old, but I thought I'd check these out. I'm so impressed. There are great ideas on projects and lots of great ways to make learning about our environment fun!

As a homeschooling mom I am always on the look-out for captivating books. This book is hand printed and ilustrated extensively in Maryjo's delicate watercolors. A "living book" that will enhance your scientific look at seeds, flowers, leaves, trees, and fruit. Her informative articles merge with her botanical illustrations like a Naturalists nature notebook. Perfect compliment to Handbook of Nature Study, by Anna Comstock and Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, by Edith Holden. Beneficial to all ages.
Though most adults will already know the "body plan" of a flower, the information is presented in such an appealing fashion as to bring out the eager student in all of us. Each page takes a unique approach to its subject matter and shows off Koch's wide variety of illustrative styles--straight naturalist paintings alongside cherubs sleeping in a lily pond. "Barking up the right tree" is Koch's way of imparting a tidbit about the importance of a tree's bark and how not to damage a tree by toying with this outer layer. Venture through eccentric English gardens, Japanese gardens, formal French gardens, topiary, and the fine art garden. As Claude Monet said, "More than anything I must have flowers, always, always."
I saw this book at the university store and I paged thru expecting an encyclopedia but to my suprize there were excellent photos and many ideas for gardens. I purchased the book for my gardening expert(my MOM) for Christmas. I am sure she will enjoy the new ideas. This is a good book for those people who have space indoors or outdoors to make arrangments and gardens. I recommend this book to those that spend many hours on their plants a week already.
